The Risk
It's not as hard as it once was for me to put my heart on the line
I make a judgement on my feelings and let them be known at the very first sign
Of returned want, desire, dreams, hope, or even the taboo word "love"
I stand on the cliff of anticipation, waiting for the harsh bully Decision's shove
The risk is that I won't hear what I most hope to
The risk is that you won't be able to return an "I love you"
The risk is never speaking again because of the uncomfortable situation
The risk is the pain searing through me at my dreams' immediate negation
But, I take the risk anyway, despite the chance of cruelty as the final cost
If I still breathe, there is still hope, so even a "no" isn't a true loss
The love will remain, and if destiny permits another chance as it once did, I'll be ready
To take another risk on loving you, and in the face of rejection hold firm and steady
