I Love You A Little Late
I recall "I just called to say I love you", by Stevie Wonder
And I also recall the way the memory of those words tears my heart asunder
I want to call you just to tell you those words again, but it's too late
It's not that I don't love you anymore, it's just that you and I no longer relate
You meant and mean so much to me, but only as a fading memory
I wish it could be different, but now just the sound of your name brings old pain back to me
So, I think on all the times that you and I spoke those words unto each other
The only time I feel the impact of those words as deeply is when I say them to my mother
And, as you once knew, I am a Mama's boy, just as I once was your man
And I know how much you were annoyed by my lax and apathetic life's plan
Now I'm on my way to actually making something of myself and your not there
But I won't bitch about your absence and talk about how life's so unfair
I just want to whisper those words once more and see your pride shining in your eyes back at me
But, I can only wistfully remember of when you would say them in overpowering sincerity in fading memories.
